More ImageJ
After reading the chapter on binary images in the text book, and trying a few more things in ImageJ I found a process where "adding" a background worked nicely.
Very nice, and I think a better test image in terms of difficulty. Same as my comment to the last post, a little bit of blob analysis may get you the last mile. You could easily throw out the specs, but still keep the long thing things. For overlapping ones, a human may need to "cut" them apart interactively (which is ok).
